View of the Stavsund estate, Staafsund, Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, print, album page, printmaker: Willem Swidde, supervision: Erik Jönssen Dahlberg, 1690 - 1696, paper, etching, etching in two parts, folded, height 214 mm x width 417 mm, garden, housing, Ekerö, Stavsund Estate, A wide engraved view shows a formal riverside estate with a large rectangular body of water in the foreground where several sailing vessels are at sea and small figures stand on the riverbank. Behind the water stretches a planted promenade lined with evenly spaced trees and pathways leading into a grand formal garden composed of symmetrically arranged parterres, fountains, circular basins, sculpted hedges, and patterned beds. Flanking the central garden are long classical buildings and pavilions with pitched roofs and multiple chimneys, courtyards enclosed by low walls, and rows of trees and orchards laid out in geometric plots. Further back the landscape opens to terraces and avenues with clipped tree lines and distant rolling hills under a shaded sky, while a decorative heraldic crest floats above the middle of the scene. Small human figures populate the grounds, walking along paths, standing by fountains, and moving near the buildings.
