Books and loose sheets are scattered on the checkered floor near the woman's feet and a quill and inkwell sit on a nearby table beneath a backdrop of tall stacked volumes. Heavy drapery hangs behind the central group, and to the right a framed architectural scene with small sculpted figures and chandeliers appears like a stage set. The composition is finely hatched with intricate shading and ornate furniture details visible within the oval frame.
