Solitaire - cards from the first two years of the European War, Tanski, Czeslaw (1862-1942), illustrator. The album 'Patience' consists of 53 playing cards with depictions related to World War I. The individual card suits correspond to the different powers: spades refer to Germany and Austria-Hungary, hearts represent France and Belgium, clubs symbolize Great Britain, and diamonds represent Russia. The last card in the deck is devoid of any suits and therefore of any associations with the warring powers; it is an allegory of Peace — a woman in a white dress holding a branch and smashing a cannon with a hammer. 1916–1917, Warsaw; drawing, album; height 32.6 cm, width 44 cm...
