Technique: drawing made with soft chalk, sharp tip and flat. Subject: windmills; rural landscapes; village; Ukrainian town — town depicted as a linear, shadowless cluster of roofs surrounded by a soft gray painterly surface of meadows with patches of trees; foreground formed by a strip of dynamically shaded, transparent clods of earth marked flat with chalk. Dimensions: height 13 cm, width 28 cm. Inscription/signature indicates work begun in 1911. Notes: lamination shows a delicate outline of the plate impression visible on the left side. Muszanka pp. 35: 'The effects are bolder, the accents are stronger, the shadows more mobile... This emphasis on the foreground... will become a favorite effect.' Style: Polish graphics; graphic.
