Denarius, Marcus Aurelius (121–180; Roman emperor 161–180), 171–172. Obverse: Head of Marcus Aurelius in a laurel wreath to the right, inscription M ANTONINVS AVG - TR P XXVI. Reverse: Roma seated on a shield decorated with the head of Medusa (gorgoneion) to the left; in her outstretched right hand she holds Victoria, in her left a spear, inscription IMP V - I - COS III. Iconography: personifications, gorgoneion, Roma (personification), shields, Victoria (attribute), spears. Roman Empire (27 BC–476). Coin; diameter 17.5–18.5 mm, weight 3.15 g, axis 180 degrees.
