Denarius, Antoninus Pius (86–161; Roman emperor 138–161), issuer: Antoninus Pius. Obverse: head of the emperor in a laurel wreath facing right, inscription ANTONINVS AVG - PIVS PP IMP II. Reverse: Annona (personification) stands left; in her right hand she holds ears of corn above a container (modius), in her left hand she holds a long rudder resting on a ship, inscription POT XXI - CO, IIII. Iconography: ears of corn, Annona, head of the emperor, personifications, modi, ships, rudders. Date: 157–158. Culture/place: Roman Empire, Rome. Object type: coin (denarius). Dimensions: diameter 16.5–17.0 mm, weight 2.70 g, axis 180 degrees.
