Denarius of Antoninus Pius (86–161; Roman emperor 138–161). Obverse: head of Antoninus Pius in a laurel wreath facing right, inscription ANTONINV AVG PIVS PP TRP XXIII. Reverse: Salus standing left, holding a patera above an altar around which a snake coils, and a long scepter in left hand, inscription SALVTI AVG COS IIII. Date: 159–160. Roman Empire (27 BC–476), Rome. Coin; diameter 17.5–18.0 mm, weight 3.15 g, axis 180°. Subjects: personifications, snakes, paterae, altars; iconography of Antoninus Pius.
