Denarius, Antoninus Pius (86–161; Roman emperor 138–161), issuer: Antoninus Pius. Obverse: head of the emperor in a laurel wreath facing right, inscription 'ANTONINVS AVG - PIVS PP TR P XI'. Reverse: Salus standing left in front of an altar, holding a patera above the altar around which a snake coils; in his left hand a rudder on a globe, inscription 'C - OS - IIII'. Personifications: Salus; iconography includes altars, snakes, rudders. Date: 147–148. Culture/place: Roman Empire, Rome. Object type/material: coin (denarius).
