Denarius of Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; reign 1107–1138). Obverse (in beaded border): a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the jaws of an upside-down dragon; under the knight’s right elbow an equal-armed (isosceles) cross topped with balls. Reverse (in triple beaded border): an equal-armed cross topped with balls; at the intersection a ball, with two radiating balls between the arms (one smaller nearer the center, the other larger—on two of them a dot). Romanesque style; iconography evokes knights, martyrs (St. Adalbert), fight between good and evil and against pagans; spears/spearheads, dragons, chain mail. Circa 1125–1138, Poland (Kraków). Coin; diameters 11.9–12.8 mm; weight 0.41 g.
