Denarius of Boleslaw III Krzywousty (prince of Poland; c. 1107–1138). Obverse: within a linear border, a knight in chain mail thrusting a spearhead into the jaws of an upside-down dragon; a sun beneath the knight’s right elbow. Reverse: within a triple beaded border, an isosceles cross topped with suns; between its arms, three quarters contain two radiating spheres (smaller ones nearer the center, a larger one), the fourth quarter contains a single large sphere; one arm intersects the other at approximately one-third of its length. Romanesque style; allegorical/Christian imagery (fight between good and evil, fight against pagans, martyrs, knights, dragons, St. Adalbert). c. 1125–1138. Poland, Kraków.
