Red-figure amphora, Apulian workshop, repossession; Classical Period vessel (3rd quarter of the 4th century BC), Apulia (Italy). Wide, tapering foot supporting a cylindrical stem merging into a belly with short horizontal handles that arch into a narrow neck topped by a tall, diagonally widening spout with floral ornamentation. Neck decorated with a wavy ornament at the top and an ingot-shaped lower section. Two ribbon-like handles run from the shoulders to the lower edge of the rim. Both sides of the body bear painted figurative scenes. Side A: a naked man and a clothed woman standing opposite each other with an altar between them; the man holds a bowl in his outstretched left hand with a cloak slung over it, his right arm down and weight on his left leg; the woman wears a long chiton fastened at the shoulders and tied at the waist. Side B: two young men facing each other wearing cloaks; the young man on the right leans on a long stick with his right arm outstretched. Beneath the handles are large palmettes surrounded by a plant motif; the lower body is decorated with a wavy ornament. Amphora; height 38.6 cm, diameter 18 cm, weight 1.47 kg.
