Crucifixion Polyptych from Pruszcz - middle part - Stations of the Cross, Crucifixion, Lamentation; sculptor; Carrying the Cross; Lamentation of Christ; Crucifixion. The carved altarpiece is divided vertically into three zones in the format of a standing rectangle, the central zone much higher than the side ones (by 2/5 of the height). The zones depict the Road to Golgotha: left — Carrying of the Cross; center — Crucifixion; right — Lamentation, shown against a landscape with buildings, all framed at the top by richly fragmented tracery canopies; side panels contain small scenes from the Old and New Testaments (combined typologically). In the central zone background three large Gothic windows are visible, and despite the landscape background (with rocky ground and buildings) the composition suggests the scene takes place in a church chancel. A strip of tracery decoration runs along the full width of the cabinet, creating a plinth. The sculptures are gilded except for faces and hands, which are painted in flesh tones; background architecture and tracery also gilded. Ca. 1500, Antwerp.
