Le pardon, from the series The Story of the Prodigal Son; Duthé, J. (1788–1869); Augustin Legrand (1765–ca.1850). Subject: The Prodigal Son (Bible), genre scene of a feast — a father rejoicing at the return of his child who had betrayed him. Medium/technique: stippled copperplate engraving (stipple technique, maniere crayon influence). Style: fashionable classicism with a somewhat stiff, dry effect. Date: before 1810. Type: print/graphic print. Dimensions: height 31.4 cm, width 37.5 cm. Notes: Augustin Legrand, French engraver, etched and produced stipple and maniere crayon works and published his own engravings; Duthé, J., French engraver and publisher in Paris, specialized in stippled copperplate engraving. The engraving belongs to a series illustrating the biblical story of the Prodigal Son, transferred by Legrand to his own times, and is an example of the late use of the stipple technique in France.
