Girl with a doll, Jan Rembowski (1879–1923). Pastel drawing, 1908–1909. Height 47.5 cm, width 31 cm. Portrait of a child (his daughter Janina Bronislawa Maria, called Nuna, b. 11 Aug 1905) with a doll; the child posed for her father many times. Notes: Rembowski studied sculpture in Laszczka's studio and met Wyspianski in 1903 while at the Kraków Academy; he spent time in Italy (dates in his hand: Nervi, 3 Apr 1907; San Miniato VI 1907; Florence 1907) and remained in Italy with his family until June 1908. His work on illustrating Learning to Read and Write was interrupted by the death of his daughter Nuna from scarlet fever on 1 Apr 1910, buried in Zakopane on 2 Apr 1910. Contemporary commentary notes Rembowski’s loose connection with Wyspianski’s studio but long-standing affinity with Wyspianski’s artistic ideals.
