The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, from the 'Apocalypse' cycle, Dürer, Albrecht (1471–1528), horses, riders, religious scenes, horseback riding, Apocalypse of St. John (Bible), New Testament (Bible), masterpiece, 1511, graphic, height 39.1 cm, width 27.8 cm, A detailed black-and-white illustration shows a dramatic scene with a group of mounted figures and fallen people amid swirling clouds and dynamic lines. Several horses with visible bridles and flowing manes are depicted in motion, ridden by figures wearing varied garments and headwear; one rider holds a raised sword while another draws a bow. An angelic figure with large wings floats above the scene. A few bearded, older-looking figures with gaunt bodies appear among the riders and some lie on the ground, their limbs splayed. Curving smoke-like shapes and dense cloud forms fill the sky, and strong linear shading creates texture on clothing, horses, and the landscape. The overall palette is monochrome in shades of black and off-white.
