The Holy Trinity; verso: architectural sketch, Pordenone (1483/1484–1539). On the recto a preparatory sketch for an altar painting for the cathedral in San Daniele del Friuli; the painting is documented as completed and paid for on January 22, 1535, so the drawing predates that. The work uses the Throne of Grace Trinitarian iconography, emphasizing the salvific nature of Christ's sacrifice. The depiction shows Pordenone's familiarity with Roman Renaissance (including Michelangelo) and northern Italian art (especially Andrea Mantegna), and his use of contrasting combinations and strong chiaroscuro. On the verso is a small architectural sketch, which was covered during conservation in 1984–1985 when the weakened paper was reinforced with Japanese tissue. Dated before 1535. Medium: drawing. Height: 38.5 cm; width: 29 cm. Subjects: God the Father, the Dove of the Holy Spirit, Christ Crucified.
