Guardian Angel, Masieski, Jan (fl. ca. 1750–1800), graphic artist; Witke-Jezewski, Dominik (1862–1944). Rocaille ornament. An angel leading a child through the difficulties of life, holding its hand and pointing to the Eye of Providence. At the bottom is a base with water, rocks, and flames built into the rocailles. The author is probably Jan Maszewski (Masieski). Signature under the image of Saint Casimir: IMVS, expanded as Ian Masieski Vilnesis Sculpsit. Masieski also signed with monograms such as IM V. sc. and IMS; a print signed IM suggests he may also have worked in Vilnius. All matrices were created with a stylus; faces and the head of Christ are stippled. Each composition features characteristic rocaille frames, cartouches, and bases. Individual plates are numbered, suggesting the prints may have been book illustrations. In 1767 Maszewski created a frontispiece for J. Kulikowski's Verbi Aeterni, so he could have produced illustrations for a book of saints' lives. 2nd half of the 18th century, Vilnius. Graphic matrix/plate.
