Composition enclosed in an oval surrounded by a linear dotted frame. Christ shown in bust with head slightly bowed, revealing a heart crowned with thorns and a burning cross on his chest. Engraving belongs to a series of devotional graphic compositions depicting images of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, probably illustrations for Jesuit or related congregational publications. Possibly executed by John Alais, a London specialist in the stippled technique. References to similar prints in Tyszkiewicz, Monuments (p. 33, item 155) noting 'Image of Christ with an open heart; the same stylus, without signature.'
