Christ with a Burning Heart in an Oval. John Alais (ca. 1778–fl. ca. 1820), graphic artist. Ca. 1800, London. Stippled copperplate engraving, height 15.6 cm, width 10.3 cm. Composition enclosed in an oval surrounded by a linear dotted frame. Christ shown in bust with head slightly bowed, revealing a heart crowned with thorns and a burning cross on his chest. Engraving belongs to a series of devotional graphic compositions depicting images of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, probably illustrations for Jesuit or related congregational publications. Possibly executed by John Alais, a London specialist in the stippled technique. References to similar prints in Tyszkiewicz, Monuments (p. 33, item 155) noting 'Image of Christ with an open heart; the same stylus, without signature.'
