S THADEUS Ap: (Saint Thaddeus the Apostle), Masieski, Jan (fl. ca 1750-1800), graphic artist; Jude Thaddeus (St.), saints, apostles, devotional representations, devotional scenes, IHS monogram, books (attribute), clouds, religious paintings, halos. The engraving shows Saint Thaddeus en pied in a folded robe, holding a book and a line. At left and above is the IHS monogram in a halo of rays. The composition is framed below with a rocaille ornament on the lower sides forming a cartouche at the bottom. The saint's face and halo are stippled. Judas Thaddeus, one of the twelve apostles, a Catholic and Orthodox saint and martyr, came from Cana of Galilee. The saint's attributes include stones, a cross, a book, a staff, a fishing boat, a club, a sword, clubs and an axe, and a line. Probably made by Jan Masiesk; similar engravings are executed with a stylus and feature stippled faces and characteristic rocaille frames, cartouches and bases. Date: 1750–1800.
