Józef Baka (1707–1780), Polish late Baroque poet, Jesuit. His Notes on the Inevitable Death is a collection of twenty-two poems; the first edition was published in Vilnius in 1766. The 1807 Vilnius edition’s authenticity has been questioned. Later editions (e.g., 1828) included two engravings. The engravings are made in the aquatint technique. At that time, engraving and lithography studios in Warsaw produced book illustrations; aquatint was introduced in Warsaw by Fryderyk Krzysztof Dietrich (arrived 1817), though plates could also have been imported from Vilnius, where aquatint was practiced by artists associated with Vilnius University. 1807, Vilnius, graphic plate; height 10.7 cm, width 9.2 cm.
