Christ with a Burning Heart, John Alais (ca. 1778–fl. ca. 1820), graphic artist, ca. 1803, London. Engraving (stippled copperplate, etched), print; height 12.7 cm, width 10.7 cm. Composition enclosed in an oval with a linear dotted frame; Christ shown in bust, head slightly bowed, displaying a heart crowned with thorns and a cross burning on his chest. Inscription reported beneath: 'Venite ad me omnes (Math. 11.28.) London Published April 21, 1803.' Part of a series of devotional graphic compositions depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus, likely created as illustrations for a publication associated with the Congregation of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; authorship highly probable for John Alais, a London specialist in the stipple technique.
