Place card — ornamental frame with a blank space in the center intended for mounting or printing an illustration from another plate or woodcut block. Cast from a woodcut block (metal casts such as copper via galvanic method, lead, or zinc were used for printing to avoid damaging original blocks; original blocks were stored for reuse). Method also used for large-scale engravings (e.g., holy images); prints may be from direct boxwood blocks or from metal, often hand-retouched, casts. Before 1900, Paris. Graphic plate. Height 13.2 cm, width 8.5 cm, thickness 2.4 cm. Graphic matrix: height 13.2 cm, width 8.5 cm, thickness 0.2 cm.
