Three mounted warriors (two in front, one seen from the back) are leading prisoners, with their hands tied behind them, walking between the horses. Wladyslaw Niewiarowicz (draughtsman), before 1851, Paris, woodcut block; height 15.2 cm, width 13.2 cm, thickness 2.3 cm., The image shows a worn, pale beige rectangular surface with rounded and irregular edges and a few darker brown areas along the border; on it is a detailed charcoal or pencil drawing of a group of figures and horses. Center foreground are two barefoot men with draped garments and visible musculature, their heads bowed and arms positioned as if bound behind them; to their left and right are mounted figures in helmets or headgear, one seated on a horse that lifts a foreleg and another on a horse facing slightly inward. The horses are sketched with visible manes and bridles. Behind and among them are faintly rendered additional figures and riders, with overlapping lines and shaded areas creating depth. The drawing uses gray and black pencil or charcoal strokes with softer smudging and erasures, and the paper surface shows circular wear marks, a horizontal crease or repaired tear across the upper middle, and some spotting and discoloration in tones of brown and gray. The overall palette consists of beige, off-white, gray, black, brown, and hints of darker tan.
