Kamchadalen at winter halt. Lithograph after a drawing by Leopold Niemirowski (1810–1883), drawn 1844; lithographed by F. Draeger (Moscow lithographic plant, ca. 1850–1860); published by Ivan Bulychov (fl. ca. 1856). Depicts an Itelmen (formerly called Kamchadal) during a winter stopover inside a yurt-like shelter by a fire; they live in southern Kamchatka and engage in fishing and hunting. Niemirowski was hired in May 1844 as an illustrator for a scientific expedition from Irkutsk through Okhotsk to Kamchatka and overland among the Koryaks, Chukchi, and Yakuts; he produced numerous documentary drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings. The expedition returned to Irkutsk 17 July 1845. The drawings were published in the album Putieshestvije po Vostochnoj Sibiri (St. Petersburg, 1856) under the expedition leader Ivan Demjanovich Bulychev; the artist’s name is not mentioned.
