View of Buda and Pest in Hungary, William Floyd (fl. 1832–1877), graphic artist; steel engraving, 1835–1850. The view shows Buda and Pest from the bank of the Danube; Pest is on the left bank and the river marks the border between it and Buda. For many centuries Pest was an independent city; the first permanent bridge was built in 1849 and in 1873 Buda, Pest, and Óbuda were officially united. The artist, probably W. Floyd, an English graphic artist active c.1835–1844, painted mainly landscapes. This plate appears to be from a series of views of famous places (including Tsarskoye Selo, Peterhof, St. Petersburg, Palermo). The steel engravings share dimensions, Cyrillic inscriptions at the bottom, and signatures on the right: 'Floid, Branderd, Godert.' Graphic print; album., A black and white engraving of a riverside scene showing a calm body of water with a long boat floating near the center and a distant town with clustered buildings and towers along the far shore; in the foreground a grassy riverbank with a group of cows and a few people—some seated and some standing—near the water’s edge; to the right a group of tall trees with textured foliage and trunks, and to the left a rocky promontory rising toward a hilltop with structures; reflected ripples and subtle shading create a sense of depth across the sky, water, and landscape, with overall tones of gray, black, and off-white.
