Joan of Arc (The Maid of Orleans; illustration in volume VII of Cesar Cantu, Universal History, 1855). Graphic print, steel engraving, 1855. Depicts Joan of Arc (ca. 1412–1431) enclosed in a double linear frame. Scene shows events after her capture by the Burgundians at Compiègne, her trial before the Inquisition in Rouen (December 1430–May 1431), accusations (including witchcraft, wearing short hair and men's clothing, and pride), her initial renunciation under threat of torture, subsequent withdrawal of recantation, transfer to an English secular court, and execution by burning at the stake on May 30, 1431. Published as an illustration for Cesar Cantu’s Universal History (Polish translation by Leon Rogalski). The 44 steel engravings in Cantu’s Universal History were likely by a German engraver; matrices used in an earlier edition were imported and reused. Print (album), height 13.9 cm, width 9.2 cm.
