Henry IV in Canossa, illustration, 1853–1857. Steel engraving, graphic print, album; 13.6 × 9.1 cm. Composition enclosed in a double linear frame depicting Henry IV (Emperor of Germany, 1050–1106) humbling himself before Pope Gregory VII at the castle of Canossa in January 1077, penitently spending three days under the castle walls in a sack and barefoot; a historical scene of penance and rulers. Illustration for Cesar Cantu’s Universal History; the edition’s engravings (44 steel engravings total) were in a German style and used matrices imported for the publication.
