Depicts Saint Boniface (Winfrid, ca. 675–754), bishop, martyr and missionary; iconography includes his role as apostle of Germany and patron of European unity. Biographical details: born in Wessex, entered a Benedictine monastery, famed for learning and eloquence; at ~40 led missions to Germany, later (719) organized church administration east of the Rhine, founded bishoprics (Salzburg, Regensburg, Passau, Würzburg, Erfurt, and Büraburg) and numerous monasteries, founded the abbey at Fulda and became its abbot; consecrated archbishop by Pope Gregory in 732; felled the pagan “holy oak” at Geismar; martyred on Pentecost, 5 June 745, at Dokkum (Dokum) along with 52 companions while administering Confirmation. Engraving style suggests a German author; matrices used were imported and reused.
