Red-figure hydria by the Amycus Painter, c. 420–400 BC (previously dated 420–410 BC). Greek red-figure hydria on a high profiled foot; the belly widens evenly toward broad, slightly sloping shoulders and a neck terminating in a wide profiled rim. The neck is decorated with an ovoid at the base and a band of leaves above; the ovoid also surrounds the rim edge. Figurative scene on the belly and shoulders above a meander band: a naked youth seated on a rock at center; a man in profile turns back, leaning on a rock with his right hand and resting his left hand on his left knee. The slender, muscular ephebe is flanked by two women in lavish robes — the woman at his left holds a mirror whose reflection the youth gazes into; the woman at his right holds a long branch topped with leaves in her right hand. Lucanian hydria, weight 2.056 kg.
