Christ with a Burning Heart, John Alais (ca. 1778–fl. ca. 1820), graphic artist; 1803, London. Stippled copperplate engraving (etched), print; print matrix/plate. Composition enclosed in an oval surrounded by a linear dotted frame. Christ shown in a bust with head slightly bowed, displaying a heart crowned with thorns and a cross burning on his chest. Inscription: 'Venite ad me omnes' (Matt. 11:28) and publication note 'Published April 21, 1803.' Height 12.7 cm, width 10.7 cm. Part of a series of devotional graphic compositions devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, likely made as illustrations for a publication associated with the Congregation of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; authorship attributed to John Alais, a London specialist in the stipple technique.
