Sarcophagus of Margareta Brahe, Duchess of Hesse-Homburg; engraved by Johann Philipp Thelott 1638–1671. Coffin depiction; German style. Subject: Margareta Abrahamsdotter Brahe Duchess of Hesse-Homburg; 1603–1669. Includes hourglasses clocks. Dated after 1669. Print; height 32 cm, width 45.2 cm., An engraved scene in monochrome tones of black, gray, and off-white shows an ornate stone chest or sarcophagus raised on two plinths, decorated with carved lion head rings and intricate scrollwork; the chest has a sloped lid also covered in ornate relief panels and cartouches, and a few sculpted rosettes and ribbon-like drapery along its upper edge. Above the chest floats a large oval wreath held by hands emerging from billowing clouds on either side, with a flowing ribbon element beneath the wreath. The setting appears architectural with a patterned floor of alternating light and dark tiles and a paneled wall or columns framing the composition; shading and crosshatching create depth and texture throughout the image. The overall palette is shades of black and gray on a cream paper background.
