Fountain in the gardens of the French Academy at Villa Medici on Pincio Hill, Rome. View towards St. Peter's Basilica. Photographer: Giacomo Caneva 1813–1865. Subjects: architecture, fountains, city panorama, Villa Medici, Monte Pincio, Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica. Ca. 1852. Photography from nature; photographic print glued to cardboard. Print: 20.0 × 26.6 cm; cardboard: 24.6 × 34.5 cm., A sepia-toned scene shows a shaded park area with a group of large trees forming a canopy across the upper part of the image, their dark foliage contrasting with a pale sky. Under the trees, silhouettes of tree trunks and branches create dense shadowed shapes. In the middle ground there is a wide, shallow fountain basin with a rounded silhouette, and near it a person wearing a hat standing by the low stone balustrade, looking toward a distant cityscape that appears faint and light against the horizon. The foreground is an open, sunlit ground area in muted beige tones, and a lighter path or strip runs along the bottom edge. Overall the visible colors are sepia browns, dark brown to nearly black for shadows, and pale beige for the sky and distant background.
