Mercy, from the series Virtues and Vices, by Heinrich Aldegrever ca. 1502–1555/1561, Renaissance; personifications of virtues, allegory; attributes include banners, pelican allegory, lion attribute, obelisks architectural elements; personifications iconography; 1552 1st edition; graphic print; height 10.3 cm, width 6.1 cm, A monochrome engraved scene shows a standing robed figure holding a tall staff with a draped banner, wearing flowing garments with visible folds and a cloak around the shoulders; the figure has long hair and bare feet positioned on rocky ground. To the upper right an ornamental shield bearing an animal head is surmounted by a perched bird, and further right a tall column or obelisk with sculpted figures near its base is visible with a small group of standing figures beside it. To the left there is a rocky landscape with a tree and scattered stones and shells on the ground. The image palette is shades of black, gray, and off-white with areas of light brown discoloration.
