Purity, from the series Virtues and Vices; Heinrich Aldegrever ca. 1502–1555/1561, graphic artist; German, Renaissance; allegorical personification of Purity with attributes including banners, figures with attributes, birds, a unicorn, and angels; architectural columns; 1552 1st edition; graphic print; height 10.1 cm, width 6.1 cm., A monochrome etched scene shows a barefoot woman standing frontally, draped in flowing robes that reveal parts of her torso and legs; she holds a long vertical staff with one hand while the other hand gestures outward. Her hair is styled in a braided updo and her facial expression is neutral. To her right is a tall fluted column with a small sculptural group near its base and drapery hanging behind the staff. To her left near the top is an ornate heraldic crest featuring a bird perched on elaborate scrollwork. The ground beneath her feet is uneven with textured rocks and vegetation, and architectural stone blocks and ledges appear behind and beside her. The image is rendered in black and grey tones on a light background.
