Sword of Emperor Charlemagne, 9th century hilt. Drawing on tracing paper glued on cardboard, with the entire surface covered and the upper edge glued onto a brown-toned backing. Gift; provenance unknown., A vertical drawing on beige paper showing the upper portion of an ornate sword with a round pommel, a long decorated grip with diagonal bands, and a crossguard with geometric and circular patterns; a detailed scabbard or guard piece with repeated floral and shield-like motifs appears below the crossguard; to the left of the grip there is a patterned shield-like fragment with a lattice of diamond shapes, and to the right there is a stylized bird emblem with outstretched wings; the page has a narrow off-white margin on the left and faint brown spots and smudges across the paper, and visible ink lines are predominantly black with the paper background beige and the margin slightly lighter.
