Medium and support: drawing on tracing paper, glued over rectangular paper which is glued by its upper edge to brown cardboard. Dimensions: drawing card: height 27.1 cm, width 20.8 cm; cardboard: height 34.7 cm, width 24.6 cm. Date: 1830–1884. Unknown place of origin., An ink drawing on tan paper showing a person seated on a horse, viewed from behind and slightly turned so the face is visible; the person wears a cloak with fur trim and a draped garment in shades of brown and tan, and holds a shield with a cross-like shape outlined in darker ink, while a strap and sword hang at the side. The horse is drawn with flowing mane and decorative tack, including a richly patterned cloth over its hindquarters rendered with detailed ink lines and shading. The composition is framed by a narrow double-lined border in a reddish tone against a pale beige background, and the image uses dark brown and black ink lines over warm brown and tan paper to define forms and textures.
