Portrait of a Man Meditating, Jan Rembowski 1879–1923. 1919. Pastel drawing, 75.5 x 79.5 cm. Depicts a pensive, grief-stricken man—possibly referring to the artist's unsuccessful war expedition when he attempted to join the Silesian Uprising in August 1919; Rembowski later enlisted in the 1st Warsaw Company, was shot down by an airplane, underwent a forced march, hemorrhaged and was hospitalized, ending his attempt at armed combat. Composition features an ornament filling the frame: colorful stripes of the blanket over the man's shoulders, wavy background shapes, a plant ornament at the bottom left, and a vibrant, curving color line. The work and Rembowski’s other pastels use the ground color to build the painting’s color range. The composition and decorative motifs are reminiscent of Wyspianski’s art., A bearded man with dark hair is shown in a three-quarter view, resting his head on his hand; his skin tones are warm with browns and ochres, and his beard and hair are dark brown to black. He wears a striped shawl dominated by blue, pink, yellow, and beige bands draped over his shoulders, and a darker inner garment visible at his sleeve. The background features an abstract pattern of flowing shapes in tan, brown, and muted red. The overall palette includes blue, pink, yellow, tan, brown, black, and ochre.
