Oil lamp, Islamic art, Arabic culture, Umayyad dynasty 661β750, Hisham II Umayyad caliph; 691β743, utility ceramics, Arabic ceramics, oil lamp used in everyday life in the Middle East, geometric ornament, made of fine yellowish clay, modelled in a two-part mould; the upper part is decorated in relief with rosette motifs arranged symmetrically among delicate dots, the composition at the rim is surrounded by an ornamental band filled with a chevron pattern. 7thβ8th century, found at Khirbat al-Mafjar; height 3.2 cm, width 6.9 cm, length 11.0 cm, A small, rounded, oval-shaped object with a textured, rough surface sits centered against a smooth gray background and is reflected faintly below; the object appears in shades of beige, tan, light brown, and pale gray, with a darker circular opening visible on one side and a small raised knob on the top, and the surface shows carved or incised markings and irregularities in color and texture.
