Set of three trays on legs kakeban. Japanese, Edo period, early 19th century. Low tables, identically decorated but of different dimensions allowing them to be stacked pyramidally. Each has an almost square top framed with high slats, supported by four curved legs connected at the bottom by four slats forming a square base. The top and the inner side of the slats framing it are coated with vermilion-coloured lacquer; the remaining surface is covered with shiny black roiro-nuri lacquer and decorated with a golden ornament of pine branches and plum blossoms made using the sprinkling technique hiramaki-e; decoration slightly raised above the background surface. Subject: plum trees, flowers, trees, pine trees, twigs, winter. Piece of furniture., Three low, rectangular stands sit side by side against a neutral light gray background, each with a glossy dark brown or black lacquer finish and curved open sides. The stands form a tiered shape with a flat top frame and a lower shelf, and they feature gold decorative leaf and vine motifs painted along their edges and legs. The smallest stand is on the left, a slightly larger one is in the center, and the largest is on the right, all showing reflections on their shiny surfaces and subtle shadowing beneath them. The predominant colors visible are black or dark brown, gold, and the light gray of the backdrop.
