Set of three trays on legs kakeban, Japanese, Edo period early 19th century. Low tables, identically decorated but of different dimensions allowing them to be stacked pyramidally, one on top of the other. Each table has an almost square top framed with high slats, supported by four curved legs connected at the bottom by four slats forming a square base. The top and the inner side of the slats framing it are coated with vermilion-coloured lacquer; the remaining surface is covered with shiny black roiro-nuri lacquer and decorated with a golden ornament of pine branches and plum blossoms, made using the sprinkling technique hiramaki-e; decoration slightly raised above the background surface. Subject: plum trees, flowers, trees, pine trees, twigs, winter. Piece of furniture., A row of three low square lacquered stands arranged from left to right, each with a red flat top surface and a glossy black base frame; the black frames feature gold painted floral and leaf motifs along their sides and curved legs, and each stand has an open rectangular lower support visible beneath the top. The background is a smooth light gray, and the surface they rest on is a slightly lighter gray. The visible colors are red, black, gold, and shades of gray.
