Set of three trays on legs kakeban, maker, early 19th century Edo period, Japan. Low tables, identically decorated but of different dimensions allowing them to be stacked pyramidally, one on top of the other. Each table has an almost square top framed with high slats, supported by four curved legs connected at the bottom by four slats forming a square base. The top and the inner side of the slats framing it are coated with vermilion-coloured lacquer; the remaining surface is covered with shiny black roiro-nuri lacquer and decorated with a gold ornament of pine branches and plum blossoms made using the sprinkling technique hiramaki-e, the decoration slightly raised above the background surface. Subject motifs: plum trees, flowers, trees, pine trees, twigs, winter. Piece of furniture., A stack of three nested rectangular trays with rounded open sides, each tray showing a glossy red surface framed by black edges decorated with gold floral and leaf motifs, the frames forming curved supports that create open rectangular spaces between the trays, all set against a plain light gray background with visible shadows beneath.
