Katagami dyeing stencil; pattern of horizontal ornamental stripes; maker, geometric ornament; katagami stencil used in Japanese dyeing; Japanese; Meiji period 19th/20th century, 1868–1912; stencil; height 40.6 cm, width 24.7 cm., A dark rectangular sheet with a textured surface contains a series of horizontal decorative bands in contrasting light color. The bands include two wider repeating geometric lattice patterns, two narrower striped-and-square motifs, and two delicate dotted floral-like lines, all arranged in alternating sequence across the sheet. The sheet shows slight creases and worn edges, and there is a small area with faint colored marks in blue and red near the center bottom. The visible colors are dark brown or black for the background, white or light cream for the cutout patterns, and small touches of blue and red.
