Katagami dyeing stencil with a motif of bamboos and bulging sparrows take ni fukura suzume, ise-katagami stencil, chuban format, bamboos and sparrows motif, stencil; Meiji period, 2nd half of the 19th century 1868–1912, Japan; height 40.1 cm, width 23.8 cm., A dark rectangular artwork framed by a light beige border shows a repeating pattern of vertical bamboo stalks and stylized floral and leafy clusters cut out in white; the background is mostly black with subtle dark blue and gray textured variations, while the white cutouts form groupings of rounded flower shapes, radiating petals, long narrow leaves, and segmented bamboo columns with occasional dripping or fringe-like details.
