Pattern cut out on the pattern: against the background of a grid of flower rosettes enclosed in rhomboids, quadrilateral reserves with a pair of doves and a small plant motif., 19th/20th century Meiji period, Japan. Template; height 41.5 cm, width 24.3 cm., A rectangular sheet of brown paper with an intricate cutout pattern fills most of the image, showing a repeating floral-like lattice with many daisy-shaped motifs and organic, curving gaps; within this lattice are three ornate cartouche shapes each containing a stylized bird rendered by delicate cut lines and feather details; the cutwork reveals white background through the negative spaces, creating high contrast with the brown paper and occasional small areas of dark shadow where layers overlap, and the paper has a plain brown border surrounding the central cut design.
