Elbow rest, Warring States Period 475–221 BCE. Standalone support in the shape of a wavy inverted letter U. Wooden core, primed; covered with multiple layers of black lacquer. Decoration painted with red lacquer with accents of yellow and purple-brown lacquer. Mid-20th century repairs/finish. Chinese; plant and geometric-plant ornament. Height 39.7 cm; length 58.5 cm; width 11.5 cm; base width 15.0 cm., A long, narrow object placed horizontally against a gray background with a smooth, glossy central section that is predominantly black and tapers toward each end, connected to two wider dark end pieces that have scuffed areas showing brownish wear and small decorative swirls in reddish-brown near the inner junctions.
