Elbow rest, Warring States Period 475–221 BC. Standalone support in the shape of a wavy inverted letter U. Wooden core, primed; covered with multiple layers of black lacquer. Decoration painted with red lacquer with accents of yellow and purple-brown lacquer. Mid-20th century restorations/alterations. Chinese; ornament: plant and geometric-plant motifs. Height 39.7 cm; length 58.5 cm; width 11.5 cm; base width 15.0 cm., A long, narrow object with a dark, glossy central section flanked by patterned end panels and short perpendicular supports, showing colors including black, deep red, brownish gold, and a muted gray background; the end panels have ornate red and brown decorative motifs on a black base with a thin red border and a band of brownish gold detailing near where they meet the central section, and the short supports carry matching ornamental patterns and colors.
