Temple lantern, Japanese, Edo period Man'en 1860–1861, 9th month of the Year of the Monkey, 1860. Cast bronze lantern assembled from elements with relief and applied solid decorations. Lantern on a high, multi-segmented shaft with a large round base; hexagonal roof decorated with dragons, pendants and bells on the edges, topped with a flaming pearl. Iconography: dragons, swastika, monkey zodiac. Function: temple lantern lamp. Weight 54.0 kg; height 184.0 cm., A tall metal ornamental object with a rounded base and a fluted column rising to a decorative midsection and an openwork spherical lantern, topped by a domed cap with curled handles and a flame-shaped finial; the object appears metallic with visible colors including dark gray, greenish patina, and hints of brass-like gold.
