Temple lantern, Japanese, Edo period Man'en, 1860–1861; 1860, 9th month of the Year of the Monkey. Bronze; lantern on a high, multi-segmented shaft with a large round base; hexagonal roof decorated with dragons, pendants and bells at the eaves, topped with a flaming pearl. Assembled from elements cast in bronze, with relief and applied solid decorations. Iconography: dragons, swastika, monkey zodiac; function: temple lantern. Height 184.0 cm; weight 54.0 kg., A tall metal object stands against a plain light gray background, showing a vertical form made of a dark greenish-bronze metal with areas of darker patina and hints of muted gold. The top section features a flame-shaped finial above a rounded cap with a curved decorative handle on one side that has a more golden color. Below that is a spherical cage-like element with perforated decorative patterns. The central shaft is composed of multiple rounded and fluted segments with a ribbed collar, all in the same dark metallic green and bronze tones. The lower section broadens into a wide circular base with raised carved relief panels showing stylized animal or creature-like forms in low relief, and the base rim has a banded profile with the same dark bronze and green coloration. Overall the piece displays a combination of smooth, fluted, perforated, and carved textures, and the visible colors are dark greenish bronze, dark brownish bronze, muted gold, and light gray from the background.
