Okimono in the shape of Oni and Shôki; maker, ; Japanese art; Japanese; Meiji period 1868–1912; subject: mythology, demons, Shôki; early 20th century; Japan; sculpture okimono; height 9.1 cm, width 16.0 cm., A carved wooden scene shows a small carriage-like structure carried by two stout, humanoid figures with exaggerated facial features and muscular limbs, each holding parts of the carriage; inside the covered compartment sits a seated bearded figure with a solemn expression holding a long staff. The carving is predominantly brown with variations in warm wood tones and subtle darker brown shading; the background is a smooth gradient of gray transitioning to pale gray near the bottom, and the surface beneath the carving is a pale off-white.
