Incense burner kôro with cover, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912. Incense burner in the shape of a cuboid box on four slightly arched legs standing on a tall, rectangular base. Decoration: panels with relief of karashishi and peonies. Cover with four holes topped with a qilin. Bronzes; peonies; flowers; karashishi iconography. 2nd half of the 19th century. Vessel. Height 22.0 cm; width 9.5 cm; depth 7.5 cm., A small rectangular metal object sits upright on a reflective surface, showing its open bottom interior; the object has a worn, mottled surface with shades of brown, copper, brass, and hints of greenish patina, and there are dark spots and rough texture inside. The exterior edges show darker brown and reddish tones with brass-colored corners, and a sculpted top edge with curved handles in darker metal is partially visible. The reflection below mirrors the colors and shapes, and the background is a smooth, neutral gray.
